A Self-Storage Operator's Guide to Getting More Website Traffic

Search Engines like Google are incredibly intelligent and becoming more so every day. When a consumer goes to Google.com and searches for "Self Storage", Google knows where that person is searching from (Georgraphical Centroid) and wants to share the most relevant results to them. In order to show up in the most relevant result, you need to prove to Google through your optimization efforts that:

  1. You are a Self Storage Facility
  2. You are close to the Geographical Centroid
  3. You are an open and active business
  4. You are Important
  5. Your site doesn't lose traffic to the next result in the Search Engine Results Page (SERP.)

Step #4 above is what we focus on in our Webinar covering Brand Mentions and Local Listings | A Self-Storage Operator's Guide to Getting More Website Traffic. How do you let Google know you are important? If the digital community is talking about you, Google thinks you are pretty important. A Brand Mention is some form of conversation about your business online. If I mention a company like Find Local Storage in this blog hosted on SiteLink's website, it is a "Brand Mention". Even though I did not include the website address, Google's knowledge algorithm is evolving so rapidly that it now understands that this conversation is about FindLocalStorage.com without me having to direct them to the website. The more Brand Mentions your business has, the better it is for your website.

Google wants to direct search results to the best of the best. If people are talking/writing about you online, Google listens, makes the correlation that your Brand Mention is associated with your website, and gives your website a little boost in the search results when someone is searching for words associated with your website, like "Self Storage".

A Citation is any mention of your business online with your Name, Address, and Phone Number (N.A.P.) listed together. This also does not need to include your website address. Until recently, Citations on high authority sites were a major indicator of brand importance. Brand Mentions have taken the lead, but Citations are still a close second and can impact your efforts. It is absolutely imperative that your N.A.P. in your citations is written EXACTLY as it appears on your website. Don't play with different tracking numbers in your citation game plan, as it will negatively impact your efforts.

There are a variety of platforms you can use to get Brand Mentions and Citations. Local Listings, if done right can have a huge influence on your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) efforts. In addition to helping your website rank better organically, some of these platforms are driving traffic directly to you. This fall at the Texas Self Storage Expo in San Antonio, a mid size operator mentioned that 50% of her walk-ins came from a popular local listing that is free to set up. That is very powerful information.

There is a tremendous amount of additional information to share on implementing brand mentions, local listings and driving more traffic to your website.
